Rocks and Art
Rocks and rock formations have been the source of inspiration for
mankind throughout time.
For example, the marvellous conical hills rising out of the misty
river valleys of the Guilin area in China have been the subjects
of Chinese art for centuries.
Many
rock landscapes around the world have been noted for their human-like
shapes like the Old Man of the Mountain in New Hampshire, shown
at the left, the Sleeping Giants of Thunder Bay and NouNou Mountain
in Kauai, Hawaii.
This trend even extends to more private parts of the human anatomy,
e.g. Mammillary Hills of Marin County California, and ‘Male Hills’
in Curacao.
Rocks have also served as the medium for the message.
Some examples include
the numerous petroglyphs and cave art of aboriginal peoples in all
parts of the world, the chalk figures such as the Long Man of Wilmington
carved in the English downs.

Alternatively, the rocks themselves become the art at
the hand of man. A wonderful example is the Carrara marble
from which Michelangelo carved his Masterpieces.
